SAN FRANCISCO (January 27, 2017) – Superstar Games, the virtual reality game developer started by industry veteran Damon Grow and legendary Hall of Famer Joe Montana, announced that its upcoming inaugural game, Montana 17, will become the very first football game for Samsung Gear and Google’s Daydream mobile VR platforms.
Montana 17, which will launch in the coming weeks, offers gamers electrifying, fast-paced VR football action featuring the fabled San Francisco 49ers quarterback. It is the first and only mobile VR game licensed by the NFL Players Association to use the likenesses of active NFL players. Several current NFL superstars such as Odell Beckham Jr., Tom Brady, Ezekiel Elliott, Julio Jones, Cam Newton and Richard Sherman are featured in the new game.
“We are happy to team up with Superstar Games and Joe Montana to license this game so that a new generation of gamers can connect with their favorite players in a unique and authentic way,” said NFLPA Vice President of Licensing and Business Development, Steve Scebelo.
Montana 17 is an all-passing, seven-on-seven offensive football game with a series of exciting, quick-play quarters.
Mobile VR gaming is the new field for professional football, and Superstar Games has produced the world's first immersive football experience created and endorsed by a living legend in Montana.
“We started Superstar Games to bring Montana Football back to video gaming. I’m especially excited to bring the game to virtual reality, a whole new experience where fans get a real feel for what it’s like to play with other NFL superstars,” Montana said.
As VR continues to transform the fan and gaming experience, Montana 17 will take advantage of new, lightweight Samsung Gear and Google Daydream mobile VR headsets, which allow players to easily interact with others in the game. The game will also soon launch on other VR platforms prior to the kickoff of the 2017 season.
San Francisco-based Superstar Games joins the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Warner Brothers among the 50 pre-approved developers on Google’s Daydream. Montana 17 is one of several sports and non-sports related mobile VR games in Superstar Games’ pipeline.
The company has raised a seed financing round from prominent sources including Montana, Presence Capital, Caelum Ventures and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Montana 17 is the only VR sports game to be supported by an NFL team owner.
