Former NFL Player Named New Beaufort High Football Coach

Beaufort High School has a new football coach — and he has ties to the National Football League.
DeVonte Holloman, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Dallas Cowboys, was named Beaufort High School’s new football coach Monday, according to a district news release.

Holloman has coached at Beaufort High for the past three years, the first year as defensive backs coach and the second and third years as defensive coordinator, the release said.

His best game as a Cowboy occurred during his rookie season, an 11-tackle, two-sack performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. He suffered two neck injuries while with the Cowboys, the second of which forced his early retirement in August 2014, according to the release.

Holloman is Charlotte native who played for the University of South Carolina as a three-year starter at safety and linebacker.

“Coach Holloman is a natural leader, and he’s already familiar with our school, our football program and our student athletes.” said Beaufort High School principal Bonnie Almond, who announced the selection today. “It’s very obvious that the kids respect him.”

    Jerrell Pippens Life After Football

Jerrell Pippens is a Philly native, Nebraska alum and former NFL player turned actor, producer, writer, host, philanthropist, owner and founder of Good Hope Productions, LLC. Jerrell has used his sports broadcasting, hosting and modeling background to transition into acting, writing,producing and storytelling.

Mr. Pippens resume includes a recurring guest star role on TNT's Murder In The First which starred Tay Diggs. In addition to that he has been apart of commercials and campaigns with brands such as Nike, Under Armour, Speedo, Bridgestone Tires, Pepsi, Bud Light, Asics, Adidas, Lady Gaga Fragrance, the NFL and the NBA.

These campaigns & commercials have been alongside other sports stars and celebrities such as Elton John, Andrew Wiggins, Richard Sherman and Robert Griffin III to name a few. Under his production company he has produced 3 short films, a web series, and a football based documentary.

A short film and web series were just nominated for several awards this past spring at the 2017 LA Web Fest. J-PIP has more in store as he is now currently developing scripted feature films as well as a sports based unscripted documentary series. There is even more in store for this rising star!

Former NFL Running Back Now A SLU Otolaryngology Resident

Football was never part of the plan. Samkon Gado, M.D., a second-year resident in otolaryngology at Saint Louis University and former NFL running back, didn’t think that a professional athletic career was in the cards.

“I was a pre-med/health major in college,” Gado said. “Medical school was always Plan A. Football wasn’t even Plan B – it was a dream.”

That dream came true, he said, due in large part to hard work and a coach who believed in him and pushed him to heights he couldn’t have imagined for himself. Gado signed as a free agent after graduating from Liberty University and played for six teams, including the Green Bay Packers, St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.

After six years in the NFL, Gado was accepted to the Medical University of South Carolina and began classes in August 2011. He came to SLU in the fall of 2015.

Gado saw a career in otolaryngology as a natural choice.

“I knew I wanted something with a surgical bent,” he said. “I’ve also wanted to find meaning in my work beyond a salary. I wanted to have meaning and purpose beyond whatever specialty I chose. The parallel of Christ being the head of the church and otolaryngology, which is also referred to as head and neck surgery, was very intriguing. I want to spend the rest of my life understanding why that analogy was used.”

5 Financial Rules To Live By

Here are five basic financial rules to live by that will change your life and put you on the path toward a more prosperous future.

1. Spend less than you earn
More than 3/4 of full-time workers were living paycheck to paycheck in 2017, and 71% of U.S. workers were in debt according to a CareerBuilder survey. Unfortunately, it's impossible to ever get ahead if you're spending as much -- or more -- than you're bringing in. To be able to save, you must have money left at the end of the month. This means you need to either increase your income or reduce your spending.

Giving Thanks For My Best Friend

Dear Fellow Former Players & Friends,

Thanksgiving again! I love the holiday season. This year I have so much to be thankful for, but I will say first and foremost that I am most thankful for my wife. Over the years we have grown. And more importantly we have grown up.

It’s Sunday night and I’m sitting around. There’s folded laundry on a chair, blankets tossed on the sofa, and a pair of muddy shoes by the door. I said to my wife “which one of your friends could come in this house right now, plop down, grab a blanket and be comfortable.

She paused for a second and said, “Well you’re my best friend… now get under this blanket.” Alright, alright. She didn’t say the get under the blanket part, but she did say I was her best friend. I didn’t make a big deal out of it. However, I did pause and reflect. I must admit my wife is my best friend.

It doesn’t mean I completely enjoy her all the time, but she does represent love and a comfortableness that is important for living a high-quality life. One can’t be on and entertaining all the time. At some point in the day there should be time to be ourselves. She is my safe zone. She is incredibly smart. Yet, she makes me laugh when she’s explaining football; telling a great lie about how much she knows.

Can Sitting Cancel Out The Benefits Of Exercise?

You've probably heard the trendy phrase that "sitting is the new smoking." Although it's an exaggeration to equate the two behaviors -- nothing comes close to smoking in its many ruinous and deadly effects on the body -- research does show that prolonged sitting may be harmful, even if you exercise regularly.

Pooling results from more than 40 studies, researchers concluded that the more time people spend on their duffs -- whether at a desk, on the couch or in the car -- the greater their risk of premature death, cardiovascular disease, cancer and especially type 2 diabetes.

Regular exercise, particularly higher levels of physical activity, appears to blunt these harmful effects somewhat but may not eliminate them entirely. An analysis of more than a dozen studies concluded that we need at least 60 minutes a day of moderately intense exercise (such as brisk walking, doubles tennis or ballroom dancing) to counter the increased risk of premature death due to prolonged sitting. But another study found that the same amount of exercise -- which is more than most physically active people get -- doesn't undo the negative effects of sitting on insulin levels and blood fats.

Shaun Smith: 
A Q&A On Retirement And Life After The Game
Shaun Smith is a former NFL DL who played for 10 years from 2003 to 2012. After trying several different paths in his life after football, Shaun has found the one that fits the best for his family.

Q: When contemplating retirement, what questions were going through your mind? Who did you turn to for answers?

I was gloomy at first because I didn’t know what was next. Since I was six years old, all I have been doing is football. When I realized that it was over with, I had to ask myself what was next. Do I coach? Do I try to be a mentor to guys? I was very indecisive.

I’ve been a little bit of everywhere with my transition. Has it been great? Yes and no, I’m not afraid to admit it. I went through a depression for a while – it was hard not knowing where my next big thrill is going to come from, that big adrenaline rush. You go from doing something all of your life, to quitting it cold turkey.
